The Light Beyond The Mountains

CLV Group & Crestpoint Real Estate Investments Ltd. embarked on this mural project to create a visible moment of awareness and education about the Indigenous peoples in Canada. As a provider of homes, we sought to produce a beautiful and impactful piece of art within the West End community. KC Hall’s vision to bring the Raven’s creation story to life at 1461 Harwood Street aligns with our pursuit to create inclusive communities and we are thankful for KC’s partnership. Our hope is that this mural offers to all who pass a quiet moment of beauty, reflection, and love on the journey to understanding, reconciliation, and healing.

This design depicts a journey of the Raven, over mountains and sky in a quest to steal the sun, a tale of creation. In the beginning, the Raven created the earth. The mountains and rivers followed, growing on their own, creating things without the Raven’s knowledge. Animals, plants, and all organisms were able to communicate with one another but not with the Raven. The Raven was unknown to others and was mocked. Its eyes carried the glow of the sun, its beak dominant and unknown. To avoid judgment and find protection, the Raven, with its love and power, created the world, hidden behind mountains. Among the Hailzaqv people, this powerful story explains the creation of coast communities. As every Raven feather dropped from the sky, a creation was formed from sand and water. Humans, village, community all stem from the source of the Raven’s love and power. This story’s theme of creation aligns with our partner’s pursuit of community building.

We acknowledge that the community of Bay Tower, 1461 Harwood Street is situated on the unceded traditional territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations and we are grateful to live, work, and gather on this land. This territory was never ceded, or given up to the Crown by the Musqueam, Squamish, or Tsleil-Waututh peoples and the term unceded serves as a reminder that Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh have never left their territories and will always retain their jurisdiction and relationships with the territory.
