Hamilton has come a long way over the past decade. Once known as the steel capital of Canada, it’s now known for being an attractive up-and-coming city with a small-town feel. With the development of the trendy “hipster-esque” James Street North, the revitalization of Locke Street, gorgeous mountain views from Hamilton East, and the beach vibe of Stoney Creek, Hamilton has an area for everyone to love.

Hamilton West
Between Dundas, Ancaster, and Dundurn Street, you’ll find West Hamilton nestled below the mountain brow. This vibrant area is home to McMaster University and the stunning Cootes Paradise that hugs Lake Ontario.
Unlike the downtown core, Hamilton West feels more like a village with coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and parks scattered along the streets. Many large Victorian homes cover the area, along with many bungalows and apartment buildings. Although this is a university area, you won’t feel overwhelmed with students as residents come from all different backgrounds and ages.
Kirkendall
In Southwest Hamilton, just as you head towards downtown, you’ll find the lively area of Kirkendall — home to the popular Hess Street and Locke Street. Many call this a “yuppie neighbourhood,” but in all honesty, it has an eclectic mix of residents and more charm than most other areas of the city. Here you’ll enjoy finding new trendy restaurants and boutique shops and a number of spots that have been local favourites for years, like the West Town. With an active patio scene and nightlife, it’s become the new “it” spot for twenty-somethings, but it also has everything a family could need. Plus, it’s very safe, making it one of the best places to live.
Hamilton East
Hamilton East puts you right in the middle of the city if you want to be close to everything. Why do people love it here? Because when you live in this neighbourhood, you can get anywhere in a matter of minutes. Plus, it’s the best spot to experience gorgeous mountain views from the brow. Best of all, there are many housing options, with a number of detached, semi-detached, condo, and apartment options in the area.
Bartonville
Bartonville has gone through a massive transformation over recent years. What used to be a rather dull area has recently taken a new form thanks to the Brock University campus that moved into the neighbourhood. But don’t let that deter you. Here, you can live in a well-kept detached home or newly furnished apartment close to a number of conveniences like the Kenilworth Access and Hamilton Go station. It’s also minutes from the King’s Forest Golf Course, the Escarpment Rail Trail, and several restaurants and shops.
Stoney Creek
Stoney Creek is just a bit further over in the east end, known for its lake and beach environment. But that’s not all there is. Here you’ll find parks, shopping, community centres, cafes, malls, and of course, many beachfront activities at Confederation Park. It’s also home to Hutch’s on the Beach, Barangas on the Beach, and Wild Waterworks, which makes it the perfect place for those who love water activities and lakefront living.
Ancaster
Located on the far end of Hamilton West, Ancaster is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. This quaint area offers lots of charm and is an excellent location for young families. It features various amenities, including countless grocery stores, restaurants, and walking paths. McMaster University is also close by, making for the perfect off-campus neighbourhood, whether you work or study at the institution.
Ancaster is also conveniently located near highway 403 and is 13 minutes from the airport. Residents can easily access GO Transit links to reach anywhere in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Durand
If you like the hustle and bustle, Durand is a downtown neighbourhood conveniently located near many businesses and office buildings. This eclectic area features historic charm with modern twists, offering a range of housing options, like new condo developments, townhouses, and heritage homes. Along with its charm comes unique heritage sites, shops, and restaurants to explore. It boasts a diverse population, from professionals to young families and older residents. You can easily access all parts of the city through the Hamilton bus system, and the GO train station is located just outside the area to help you get to other destinations outside of the region.
